What does the Senior Section do?
In the Senior Section, young women participate in a fun and flexible programme known as Look Wider. The programme is also linked to a variety of recognised qualifications or awards, both within and outside guiding. The opportunities and challenges which guiding offers can be followed by a group or by individual members and are designed to be particularly beneficial to girls getting ready to embark on a career.

  • The 'Look Wider' Programme is based around eight programme areas known as Octants: *Creativity, *Fit for Life, *Community Action, *Out-of-doors, *International, *Independent Living, *Personal Values, *Leadership.
  • A young woman may belong to the Senior Section from her 14th to her 26th birthday. The Senior Section includes: *Ranger Guides, both members of Ranger Guide Units and Lone Ranger Guides; *Young Leaders (including Lone Young Leaders); *Young Leaders, Advisers and Commissioners who choose to participate in the section programme; *Junior Council members; *Members of Student Scout and Guide Clubs; *British Youth Council delegation members; *Female LINK members; *Girlguiding UK Duke of Edinburgh's Award participants.
  • The Senior Section Promise is the same as the Guides Promise, with the added responsibility 'To be of service to the community'.
  • Members wear section wear appropriate to the group to which they belong, or wear clothing suitable for the activity in which they are participating.

Look Wider programme
All Senior Section members are encouraged to participate in the Look Wider programme, or at least sections of it. Look Wider has a wide range of programme ideas and individuals can work through it in a self-governing manner with the help of the Look Wider team or other guiding groups as support. Senior Section members can take part in the programme as individuals, or as part of a group.

Members may either dip in and out of the octants (see above) or follow a more structured approach by working through phases. There are three phases, representing different levels of commitment:

  • Starting something – choosing three activities or ‘tasters’ and giving them a go.
  • Building on it – choosing one activity to develop for an extended period (typically three months).
  • Taking things further – gaining a qualification or teaching your skills to others.

The award is divided into five areas:>p>

  • service in guiding
  • outdoor challenge
  • personal skill development
  • community action
  • residential experience

Young Leader Qualification
The Young Leader Qualification is open to all Senior Section members aged 14 to 16. After your 16th birthday, you are eligible to start working on the full Leadership Qualification. Being a Young Leader in guiding is a rewarding and fun experience. The Young Leader Qualification has been designed to help you take an active part in the effective running of a unit. The two modules that make up the Young Leader Qualification are:

  • Your role in the programme - Module 1
This allows you to demonstrate that you know and understand the programme for the section you are working with. So, if you are a Young Leader with a Brownie pack, you need to know about what Brownies do and show that you can sometimes lead different activities, like a game or a Pow-wow.
  • Your role in Girlguiding UK - Module 2
You need to demonstrate that you can work with girls and young women and understand something about them.

Anything that you do towards your Young Leader Qualification will count towards the full Leadership Qualification if you decide to go on and do this.

More information about the Young Leader Qualification can be found here
