County Netball

On Saturday 2 April 2011 Guides from across Oxfordshire came together to enjoy the game of Netball. Girlguiding Oxfordshire‟s first Netball festival took place at the Manor prep school Abingdon.

The event was run by Helen Wynn local leader who works for the netball association. Guides learnt about the safety aspects of the game, the positions of play, attack and defence and the fundamentals of how to shoot. After a warm up and some practice everyone got to play games and to try out the various positions.

Guides got to enjoy a day of physical activity in a fun and friendly way. Learning sportwomanship skills and developing their sport specific skills. Whilst working as a team. All those that took part may if they choose continue to play and gain their sports badge.

The day linked to the guide program which encourages girls to work in small groups and promotes healthy lifestyles.

The fair play/sportswomanship award went to a local group from Abingdon St Edmunds Guides. The final was contested by 1st Bodicote Guides and 2nd Bicester Guides. With 1st Bodicote the victors.
Guides said they were there to have fun and learn more about the sport in a friendly environment.

Rachel Evans from 1st Bodicote Guides said “I cannot believe we won; we take part in everything because it is fun but we do not usually win”. Rebecca Welbourne said “I have had a great day and met some really nice people. I usually play attack but it was good try the other positions. I made a new friend when playing Goal Keeper”.
