"Lovely Buns”

On the 19th of March, 1st Middle Barton Guides and some very brave leaders went to Jubilee House in Oxford for a sleepover. Our aim of the weekend was to gain the “Wonderland” badge, based on Alice in Wonderland. To do this, we did lots of exciting activities such as croquet with tent mallets and going round the assault course, in the lovely sunshine, to find the Queen of Hearts – we even had a troll underneath the wobbly bridge!

4th Wantage Guides

4th Wantage Guides went litter picking around the Health Centre on Mably Way , Wantage, on Monday 4th April. The local guiding units take it in turns to keep the area free from rubbish once a month. The girls were decked out in luminous vests and protective gloves and used litter pickers. They collected bags full of rubbish. In its own small way, the event neatly fulfils one aspect of Girlguiding UK ‟s statement of purpose, enabling girls to make a difference to the world.

It is now led by Jo Waugh (works at The Chiltern Centre in Henley and a former Sonning Common Guide) and Merryn Ough (a teacher at Sonning Common Primary from Shropshire) who between them have a wide range of Guiding experience. We have had an exciting first time getting to know each other and have lots of things planned for the year to come including a trip to London Guide style!

We had a flying and furry visit recently from Sadie at Feathers & Fur, Maidenhead. We met Jacob and Edward, the two very friendly and photogenic guinea pigs; Bob Tail and Gimley, two very funny and a little smelly ferrets;

Faringdon and Stanford-in-the-Vale

More than 100 Brownies, Guides and Rainbows from Faringdon and Stanford-in-the-Vale gathered for a huge indoor street party to celebrate the centenary.

The girls feasted on hotdogs, flapjacks and brownies (the chocolate sort!) before the oldest and youngest members there blew out the candles on a giant birthday cake and everyone headed outside for the 2010, 20/10 2010 moment.

They sang traditional songs as they walked to Faringdon Market Place where they listened to the church bells being played especially for the occasion. Barn Owl (Louise Terry from 4th Faringdon Brownies) was among those in the church tower leading the bell ringers.

News from First Barton Brownies

In January, First Barton Brownies received a very special invitation from the Oxford Playhouse to go and see their pantomime, Cinderella, which was written and directed by former Chief Scout, Peter Duncan.

The pantomime was amazing and we all had a fantastic time. We had front row seats (which meant that we got a bit wet), and Brown Owl almost got a kiss from Prince Charming! We all agreed that the Ugly Sisters were very funny, even though they were mean to Cinderella. As an extra special treat, we even got to go backstage after the show to meet the two miniature ponies that had pulled Cinderella’s carriage to the ball.
